Warts: Diagnosis, Treatment And Prevention

Warts are a common skin problem in both children and adults. They appear as a fleshy growth that can be found anywhere on the skin, but are more commonly found on the hands, feet and genital area. Warts are benign growths meaning they have no potential for harm. However, for some patients, warts can be a distressing or embarrassing health issue. Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are over 100 types of this virus and it is easily transmitted between people or fomites (objects or materials which are likely to carry infection, such as clothes, utensils, and furniture). Sometimes the wart forms right away, or there can be a delay. This is because HPV can remain dormant in skin cells for quite some time. It is very difficult to pinpoint when you came in contact with HPV. The good news is that warts are easily treated!

Here at the Rejuvenation Center for Mind and Body, Dr. Festa uses various methods to treat warts. Treatment modalities include cryotherapy (freezing), curettage (removal with an instrument), application of TCA (an acid), and prescription medications. The treatment Dr. Festa will recommend depends on the size, location, and appearance of the wart.

There is also a vaccine available to prevent genital warts. Inquire within to learn more about this and to see if you are eligible.
