Jeuveau vs Botox: Side Effects To Expect From The Injections

Neurotoxins are certainly game-changers when it comes to non-surgical skin rejuvenation and anti-wrinkle treatments. And when you’re thinking of cosmetic injectables, Botox is the first name that comes to mind. However, there’s another form of botulinum toxin that has been rising in popularity: Jeuveau. There’s still a lot to know about this latest neurotoxin and one of the common questions is regarding their safety and potential side effects.

So what side effects should you consider from Jeuveau and Botox injections? The risks and side effects of Botox and Jeuveau are technically the same since they are both neurotoxins with similar safety profiles. Some of the possible reactions from the treatments are swelling, bruising, redness, injection site pain, tenderness, headache, and drooping eyelids. Most of these are temporary and normally resolve on their own within a few days.

Is There A Difference Between The Side Effects of Jeuveau and Botox Injections?

Botox injections have been around for decades and there are no more doubts about its safety and efficiency as an anti-aging treatment. But recently, Jeuveau, also marketed as Newtox, has emerged as a worthy competitor that’s also said to be effective for correcting moderate to severe lines and facial wrinkles. Both are approved by the FDA for cosmetic use although Botox was first cleared in 2002 while Jueveau only received its approval in 2019.

Both injections are derived from botulinum toxin type A, although they contain different forms of the substance. Still, they’re very similar in many aspects: from their molecular weight, mechanism of action, to their safety and possible side effects.

Common Side Effects From Jeuveau and Botox Treatments

The procedure for administering Jeuveau and Botox injections is completely non-invasive and they can be done within a matter of minutes. It’s mostly safe and there are minimal risks for adverse reactions and complications as long as you get the treatment from an experienced cosmetic injector.

But as with any cosmetic procedure, there are still common side effects that can happen post-injection. Here’s an overview of the possible aftereffects that may occur from Botox and Jeuveau treatments:

 Botox Jeuveau
Common side effects Localized pain, swelling, bruising, and tenderness Injection site pain and discomfort swelling, bruising, tenderness
Less common side effects Headache, eyelid or eyebrow droop, muscle weaknessVision problems, upper respiratory infection, increased white blood cell count
Rare complications that could arise from the spread of toxinBotulism, loss of bladder control,  difficulty in swallowing, allergic reactionsAllergic reactions, symptoms of botulism, irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, loss of strength

1) Injection site reactions

It’s normal to experience needle-related pain, swelling, minor inflammation, and bruising at the treated site. Botox and Jeuveau require intramuscular injection so some degree of pain on the injection area is expected due to the small needle breaking the skin. Most of these effects should only last for a couple of days and subside on their own.

2) Headache

Some clinical trials on Botox and Jeuveau have also reported mild headache symptoms as a potential side effect. According to the studies, about 1% of patients who were treated for forehead wrinkles and frown lines may experience having a headache after treatment.

Poor injection technique and over-contraction of the forehead muscles are two of the reasons why this side effect can happen. Taking pain relief medications can help remedy your headache after Botox and Jeuveau treatments.

3) Drooping eyelids or eyebrow

Droopy eyelids or brow ptosis happens when the skin in the upper eyelid or the brows begin to sag and falls downward. This often occurs when the injector doesn’t have much skill and they place the injection in the wrong site or if they use too many units of botulinum toxin. According to clinical trials, this can happen in at least 5% of Botox-treated patients while it’s been reported to occur in 2% of Jeuveau patients.

While this side effect can seem serious, it should get better within 3 to 4 weeks from treatment. If it causes you discomfort, you can buy some prescription apraclonidine eye drops to provide relief.

4) Muscle weakness

As wrinkle injectables, both Botox and Jeuveau are intended to relax facial muscles to smooth out the lines and wrinkles. Severe muscle weakness is an uncommon side effect of the treatment, although it can happen when the toxin spreads from the site of injection and affects the muscles in other areas.

The temporary weakening of the muscles from treatment with botulinum toxins shouldn’t last for more than 2 weeks. If you experience all-over muscle weakness for a longer period of time, you should immediately seek emergency medical treatment from your provider.

5) Vision problems

When the botulinum toxin product is injected into the areas around the eyes, there’s a slight risk of having vision problems like dry eye, double vision, blurred vision, eye pain, or excessive tearing. The neurotoxin may irritate the eyes and can affect your ability to see properly. Thankfully, this side effect isn’t permanent and they should get better within a few weeks. But if its symptoms persist, you should go to your healthcare provider for treatment.

6) Upper respiratory infection

In clinical studies for Jeuveau, there have also been some reported incidences of upper respiratory tract infection as a potential side effect from the injections. It was seen in at least 3% of patients who were treated with the neurotoxin. Most of its symptoms like hoarse voice, cough, and runny nose are mild and should go away on their own with a few days of rest. However, you should consult a doctor if your condition worsens to get proper treatment.

Most individuals who received Botox and Jeuveau injections can expect to return to their normal activities after the procedure. To get the best possible results with minimal side effects, you should follow these aftercare instructions:

  • Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the injection sites to help the swelling and bruising go down faster
  • Avoid lying down and remain elevated for at least 4 hours after the injections
  • Avoid getting any facial massage or treatments that may put pressure on the treated areas
  • Minimize sun exposure for the first few days after the procedure. If you’re going out, make sure to wear sunscreen to minimize sun damage.
  • Avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours after getting the injections
  • Don’t take any blood thinners or herbal supplements since they may increase your bruising risk

Jeuveau or Botox: Is One Injectable Treatment Better Than The Other?

When comparing Botox and Jeuveau as cosmetic injectables, their similarities outweigh the differences. They essentially work as a muscle relaxant by stopping the release of chemical signals that cause contractions of facial muscles. This effect eventually results in the temporary improvement of the appearance of wrinkles and facial lines.

But to help you make a decision on which botulinum toxin injection to get, it’s important to know some of its distinct qualities. Here’s an overview of the things you need to know about Botox and Jeuveau:

Common applications Botox Cosmetic treatment is approved to soften the look of crow’s feet, vertical frown lines, and forehead wrinkles. It’s also popularly used off-label for lip augmentation, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, chin dimpling, and jawline slimming. It can also be used as medical therapy for cervical dystonia, muscle spasms, hyperhidrosis, migraines, and overactive bladder. This injectable toxin has only been approved for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.Off-label, cosmetic providers can use this for lateral canthal lines, lip lines, chin wrinkles, and bunny lines. Unlike Botox, Jeuveau is solely used for aesthetic treatment.
Onset of results and how long its effect last You may need to wait up to 2 weeks to see the results of the injections. You can enjoy its full effects for 3 to 4 months, although it can last for up to 6 months in some people. Many doctors suggest that Jeuveau can relax muscles faster than Botox so you can see initial results within 2 to 10 days.
